Herb serves dosa at both its restaurants: at 96 Granby Street in Leicester (dosas from £6.89) and at 5-6 York House, Clarendon Avenue in Leamington Spa (from £7.89). Every dosa comes with sambar and coconut chutney, and most are vegan and gluten free. The masala dosa is the classic first order.
What is a dosa?
A dosa is a thin, golden crepe from South India, made from a batter of rice and urad dal (black gram lentils) that is soaked, ground and left to ferment, then spread on a hot griddle. The fermentation gives it a light tang and a crisp edge. It is served rolled or folded, with sambar (a lentil and vegetable stew) and coconut chutney for dipping. See our guide to idli, dosa, uttapam and vada.

Which one to order first
A masala dosa is the classic introduction. If you want something lighter, order a plain dosa; if you want a larger meal, the paper masala dosa or a thali. Spice is mild to moderate; ask for milder if you prefer. Dosa is also quick, which makes it a good choice for lunch: see lunch in Leicester.
